Institutional Quality, Social Welfare, and Human Development

Despite growing scholarly interest in public administration, existing bibliometric syntheses have primarily analyzed institutional governance or economic development in isolation, leaving a critical knowledge gap regarding the joint mapping of governance, social welfare, and human development.

To bridge this gap, this study addresses the following central research question: How have global scientific structures, thematic trajectories, and intellectual foundations evolved at the intersection of institutional quality, social well-being, and human development?

This paper systematically examines the nexus between institutional governance, social well-being, and human development through a quantitative bibliometric analysis of 1,266 peer-reviewed articles indexed in the Scopus database spanning 1994 to 2025. By exploring how public governance mechanisms impact social welfare and inclusive development, this study traces the conceptual evolution and structural dynamics of the domain. Empirically, the field exhibits strong academic dynamism with an average annual growth rate of 18.59%, involving 4,635 contributing authors and an average citation impact of 23.46 citations per document.

The synthesis reveals a shift from early economic growth-centric paradigms toward multidimensional welfare frameworks, highlighting the role of institutional quality, transparent public management, and equitable social policy. The findings identify critical knowledge gaps, particularly concerning governance dynamics in developing contexts, and offer a strategic roadmap for future empirical and policy research.
