The Balanced Scorecard for public education institutions: a bibliometric perspective

Abstract

The implementation of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) in state educational institutions presents a major opportunity to strengthen the performance management process within these institutions. However, the application of this tool in state educational institutions has yet to be adequately documented through a systematic bibliometric analysis of the literature.

The main aim of our study is to map the evolution of international scientific research on the application of the BPM in public educational institutions through a bibliometric analysis of the Scopus database covering the period from 2002 to 2026. To this end, the use of the VOSviewer and Biblioshiny software enables us to conduct a descriptive and relational analysis in order to identify trends, scientific collaborations and the main thematic areas.

The results show a gradual increase in scientific output from 2002 onwards, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of this topic and revealing a significant concentration of scientific output centred around a limited number of authors and publications. The results illustrate the interdisciplinary nature of this field of research, in which the social sciences account for 25 per cent of the scientific publications surveyed, whilst the most prolific author has produced a total of 14 publications.

This study aims to make a significant contribution to the scientific mapping of this field and the identification of its key areas, whilst offering avenues for reflection for future research into the adoption of TBP within the performance management process of public educational institutions.
