Destination Image as a Determinant of Tourism Attractiveness: A Conceptual Analysis
Keywords:
Destination image; tourist appeal; place branding; perceived attractiveness; affective evaluationAbstract
Destination image is a key factor in understanding tourist behavior and in building a region’s appeal. In a context of increased competition among destinations, perceptions associated with a region play a decisive role in tourists’ decision-making processes. This article aims to analyze the role of destination image in shaping tourism appeal and to propose an integrative conceptual framework that articulates its various dimensions.
Based on an in-depth review of the literature in tourism and territorial marketing, this research highlights that destination image rests primarily on two complementary dimensions: a cognitive dimension, relating to beliefs and knowledge associated with the destination’s attributes, and an affective dimension, linked to the emotions and feelings it evokes. The analysis shows that these two dimensions interact dynamically in the formation of tourist perceptions.
On this basis, the article proposes an integrative conceptual model that positions destination image as a direct explanatory mechanism for tourism attractiveness. Unlike the models by Baloglu and McCleary (1999), which focus on the image formation process, and the multidimensional approach by Echtner and Ritchie (1993), this model highlights the structuring role of the image in the evaluation and selection of destinations. It emphasizes that cognitive perceptions influence both affective reactions and tourism attractiveness, while emotions directly reinforce perceived attractiveness.
From a managerial perspective, this conceptual framework offers destination managers an analytical tool to better understand the perceptual mechanisms underlying tourism attractiveness and to guide territorial marketing and communication strategies toward a better integration of cognitive and emotional dimensions.
