Abstract

Morocco, faced with major structural challenges such as water scarcity and the effects of climate change, has made the transition to sustainable agriculture one of its strategic priorities. As a fundamental pillar of the national economy, the agricultural sector is now obliged to reduce its ecological footprint while ensuring food security and rural development.

In this context, green finance is an essential lever for supporting this transition. It makes it possible to mobilize financial resources for more environmentally friendly agricultural practices, promoting the adoption of sustainable technologies and the optimization of natural resource use.

This article provides an analytical and critical review of the literature, with the aim of analyzing how green finance instruments can support this transition, in light of agency, signaling, and stakeholder theories. The analysis examines the theoretical foundations of green finance, the opportunities offered by financial instruments to support the sustainability and competitiveness of the Moroccan agricultural sector, as well as the constraints and prospects associated with their use.

This review also highlights the conditions for success and the limitations of these instruments in the Moroccan context, shedding light on the literature on green finance and sustainable agriculture and proposing an analytical framework to guide practice and research in similar contexts.
