Key final energy consuming sectors in Morocco: an input-output analysis

In this paper, we rank productive sectors according to their final energy consumption from the perspective of final demand. We use two main primary sources of data to explore the Moroccan case. The first is the conventional input-output table for 2016 prepared by the High planning commission (HCP, 2017). The second source is the energy balance for Morocco for the year 2016 published by the United Nations (UN, 2018). The final energy consumption is the energy consumed by end users such as government, households or exported, government or exported. The point is to identify which sectors deserve more consideration in Morocco to reduce energy consumption. Identifying key sectors in final energy consumption allows policymakers to prioritize interventions and concentrate efforts on these sectors. The results show that productive sectors that deserve more consideration from energy policy makers are: Transport, Commerce and Public Services, Agriculture, Food and tobacco, and Mining and Quarrying. Moreover, acting on own impact of each sector, allows targeted energy policy measures to be implemented without affecting final demand.
