Quality of Life: A Remedy for Urban Excess -The Case of the City of Tangier
Keywords:
Urban quality of life, Urban socio-economic dynamics, Spatial justice, Urban excessAbstract
The aim of this research is to master the analytical tools of urban sociology and apply them to architectural and urban design. This work is structured around three interdependent pillars: A conceptual investigation that unpacks key notions such as urban excess and quality of life in the city; A diagnostic approach based on the development of an indicator framework to assess the quality of life in urban environments; The integration of insights drawn from these analyses into urbanistic and/or architectural design processes.
This article explores both the factors contributing to the success and the shortcomings of the urban experience in general, with a particular focus on the city of Tangier. It puts forward the concept of quality of life as a potential remedy for the chronic dysfunctions generated by unchecked urban expansion.
Tangier, which holds a rich yet underappreciated cultural and historical heritage, stands as a compelling case study. Its strategic geographic location positions it as a socio-economic crossroads, yet the city reflects a dual-speed development that fuels stark inequalities among its own residents. The lack of adequate public services and infrastructure, as well as the absence of a strong urban identity, makes it a particularly relevant subject of investigation
