Abstract

This article presents a cross-disciplinary literature review on the interrelations between solidarity tourism, citizen participation, and sustainable territorial development. In response to the shortcomings of mass tourism, solidarity tourism is emerging as an ethical alternative that places citizens at the core of local development dynamics. After outlining the theoretical foundations (participatory democracy, territorial governance, capability approach), the paper examines concrete forms of citizen involvement in tourism projects, their impacts on local development, and the challenges faced. It highlights the necessary conditions for participation to be genuine, inclusive, and a driver of social transformation.
