Abstract

Affectivity in the medico-social sector enables social workers to create meaningful bonds with the people they help, thus enhancing the effectiveness of their work. Nevertheless, excessive emotional commitment can lead to burnout. Several research studies have highlighted the fact that social intervention professions are the most prone to burnout. This article presents an exploratory study of the links between the different forms of commitment of social workers and the level of burnout they experience. The results of a survey of 127 social workers in France showed that the majority of workers experience burnout symptoms as a result of their emotional attachment to what they do for a living.
