Informal Economy in Morocco: From Definition to the Main Characteristics of Informal Production Units
Keywords:
Informal Economy – Informal Production Unit (IPI) – MoroccoAbstract
This article provides an overview of the Informal Economy in Morocco. Firstly, this paper aims to clarify the term « Informal Economy » according to definition used by the « Haut-Commisariat au Paln (HCP) », Morocco’s national statistics office. Secondly, our focus shifts to presenting the scale of the informal economy in Morocco, both in terms of its contribution to job creation and wealth creation (contribution to GDP). In this regard, available data indicates an informal employment rate exceeding 80% of total employment in Morocco and a contribution of approximately 11.5% to non-agricultural GDP. Furthermore, the analysis of available data on the informal sector allowed us to identify three main characteristics of informal employment in Morocco, which generally refer to the institutional, economic, and social precariousness of the jobs performed. These jobs are indeed carried out by small-sized IPUs, created through individual initiative, and of which 85% have no relationship with public administration agents.
