This study aims to provide a comprehensive bibliometric mapping of the scientific literature on risk management and governance, in order to identify its intellectual structure, thematic evolution, and emerging research trajectories over the period 1988–2025. By examining the dynamics of publication, collaboration, and conceptual development, the paper seeks to clarify how these two interconnected fields have evolved and converged within contemporary organizational research.
To achieve this objective, a bibliometric analysis was conducted using Biblioshiny, the web interface of the R package Bibliometrix. Data were extracted from Scopus and Web of Science and subsequently cleaned and harmonized to ensure metadata consistency (authors, affiliations, keywords, and sources). The analysis combines descriptive performance indicators with science mapping techniques, including co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrence analysis, and thematic evolution mapping.
The results reveal a significant acceleration in scientific production since the mid-2010s, accompanied by increasing interdisciplinary integration. The findings highlight the growing prominence of ESG-related risk models, digital governance mechanisms supported by artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics as emerging thematic clusters. The geographical distribution shows the dominance of established research hubs while indicating a progressive expansion toward emerging economies. Overall, the study demonstrates a conceptual shift from traditional compliance-oriented risk management toward a strategic, sustainability-driven governance perspective.
This bibliometric mapping contributes to the structuring of the field by offering a synthesized interpretation of its intellectual foundations and future research avenues. It provides researchers with a clarified landscape of theoretical developments and offers practitioners strategic benchmarks to anticipate transformations in governance and risk management practices.
