Sustainable tourism in Morocco: a lever for innovation and resilience as part of the new development model
Abstract
new development model. Traditionally a driver of economic growth, this sector is evolving to balance the needs of tourists with those of local communities and natural ecosystems. Morocco, rich in cultural and natural heritage, is moving towards a development model that fully integrates sustainability principles. Technological innovations and ecological practices, such as the use of renewable energy and sustainable water management, are at the heart of this transition. For example, projects like the Tazekka eco-village and the eco-friendly hotels in Marrakech exemplify this sustainable approach, combining environmental preservation with the enhancement of the tourist experience.
The Moroccan tourism sector also demonstrates significant resilience in the face of global challenges, including climate change and health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Adaptation measures, such as the implementation of strict health protocols and the promotion of domestic tourism, have helped maintain the sector's vitality. Economically and socially, sustainable tourism contributes to local job creation and economic diversification while valuing the cultural and natural heritage of local communities.
To further strengthen sustainable tourism in Morocco, several recommendations are proposed: developing supportive policies, promoting technological innovation, investing in local initiatives, raising environmental awareness, and fostering collaboration among various stakeholders. In the future, Morocco could become a regional model for sustainable tourism by integrating cutting-edge technologies and diversifying its tourism offerings to attract a varied international clientele. By embracing these efforts, tourism in Morocco can play a central role in creating harmonious and sustainable development.
