The dimensions of short food supply chains: a systematic literature review
Abstract
This article aims to enrich the scientific literature on SFSCs by exploring their main dimensions through a systematic review of the literature, covering the period from 2016 to 2024. Using the PRISMA methodology 19 articles were picked from databases such as Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Elsevier. This analysis identified eight key dimensions of SFSCs. These dimensions include social, collaborative, informational aspects, as well as environmental challenges, which remain underexplored in the existing literature. The main conclusions of our article reveal the identification of eight dimensions framing SFSCs. Some of these dimensions are still under-researched in current literature, particularly the geographical dimension, for which there are no defined criteria regarding maximum distance. Our analysis also highlights the inherent complexity of SFSCs, requiring a more precise and in-depth approach in future research. Thus, this article significantly contributes to filling the gaps in the current literature, highlighting not only the dimensions already studied but also those that deserve more thorough attention. This work expands the understanding of SFSCs and identifies aspects that are still under-covered, while bringing new perspectives on the complexity of these supply chains. To go beyond this initial exploration, future research directions are essential. Qualitative studies could be conducted to develop a conceptual model of SFSCs, integrating all the identified dimensions. Empirical validation of this model could then be carried out using quantitative approaches to confirm the relationships between these dimensions and provide concrete evidence of their impact on the sustainability and efficiency of SFSCs. This combined methodological approach would thus open new avenues for better understanding and improving the functioning of SFSCs.
