Abstract

Higher education is a scientific and cultural asset that fosters technological, economic and social development and transformation. It stimulates research, innovation and knowledge exchange and equips students with the skills to cope with an ever-changing labour market. In this paper, we seek to highlight the role that governance can play in the performance of higher education institutions. We have examined the various elements that contribute to performance, such as models of university governance and governance practices. These elements are linked and complement each other to establish a high-performance system. Also, we examined theories, namely, agency theory, stakeholder theory, and collaborative theory, to understand the relationship between governance and performance, which gave us a conceptual structure for our study. The main objective of this article is to present a literature review on the issue of performance in higher education institutions. Firstly, we will present a literature review of the concept of governance and, secondly, the theoretical framework of the relationship between governance and performance.
